I found this article and found it interesting given the recent discussions in our class. Some sociologists are saying that whites are feeling like they were the priviledged and have of late become the new minority. Whether or not this is true, scholars state that some whites are adopting "the language and protest tactics of an embattled minority group."
Do you believe that? More colleges are offering "whiteness studies" and offer scholarships for needy white men. The majority of these white discontents are either those who identify with the Tea Party, are Republican, or are Evangelical Christian.
What happens when white is no longer the "norm?"

It seems to me that there is certainly a focus on minorities almost to the point that it may seem that whites are being discriminated against, but part of me wonders if its just part of the process of things becoming equal.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it seems that whites are not so much being discriminated against as they are just coming to more equal terms with minorities. It is indubitable that whites are currently the majority in both the public sphere as well as the political sphere in this country, which definitely gives them a position of relative power.
ReplyDeleteTherefore, as they have to join the unemployment lines with "those people" (that is, minority groups), they feel like they have lost status and power, when in reality they are only coming closer to equality with those minority groups.
