Minorities to Outnumber the Majority by 2045?
This video briefly mentions the issue regarding immigration and how the minority could become the majority in the future. How does this relate to what we've been talking about in class? Is this really an issue or...?

Yes, this is a real issue. It could apply to both immigration and affirmative action. Some questions concerning immigration are 'Do we want to allow Hispanics to become a majority?' or 'Should we try to promote the immigration of more Anglo Saxons?'.
ReplyDeleteAs far as affirmative action, if we institute a policy based on race now, how will it change when there is no minority? Which races will benefit? To avoid that issue, I feel we should just use socioeconomic status as a factor in school admissions and not race.
I agree with Matt. This is a real issue. Not only is this a sign that the immigration is a problem that needs to be dealt with (the border), but it is also a social problem. Is the Spanish culture going to take a more prominent role in society and its workings? Even today we see that the Spanish language is taking a prominent role in society. One can't go to a fast food restaurant without trying to comprehend what the cashier is saying. Ultimately, this change is dividing America into seperate groups of people with two very different cultures.
ReplyDeleteAlso, with affirmative action, will the minority of whites start gaining access to this policy? There needs to be a change to this policy because of the changes in society with races. My personal opinion is that affirmative action should be abolished and that the quality of the person should be the sole basis in the acceptance of a person into college.
The Hispanic majority is a huge social problem that needs to be dealt with. We need to unite as one culture and one people.
I have to respectfully disagree a little with Andrew on this one on at least one point.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do not think that 3.5 GPA minority student should be accpeted over a 3.7 GPA belonging to the majority, I think that affirmative action may be acceptable in some ways.
If there are two candidates who are essentially equal in all regards except race, I'm ok with the minority student being chosen over the one who belongs to the majority. African American people for example are still discriminated against. Yes, although we do not like to admit it, racism is alive and well. One of the best ways for this racism to be cleaned out of the system is for people to continually see Black people suceeding.
I'm ok with a University using race as the last deciding factor. The black community has enough setbacks already. They could use a break here and there.
