Lou Dobbs is notorious for spreading myths and stereotypes about Latinos and immigrants, even as his network (CNN) is wooing Latino viewers with their new program Latino in America. This has caused quite the controversy and a number of groups are trying to get Lou Dobbs fired.
What do you think? Should Lou Dobbs be tolerated or should he be fired?

fire him.
ReplyDeleteI don't necessarily agree with what Dobbs is saying and the influence he has, but it comes down to the question of 'who can say what?' In my opinion we can all say whatever the heck we want to, even if it offends, hurts, or has a negative impact on other people. It's our right. I think CNN should only fire him if he isn't getting enough viewers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Lou Dobbs should be fired. I agree with the previous post about having the right to say what you want, even though it is harmful. But, people like Lou Dobbs say things that get other people fired up and wanting to make a change. Changes that maybe wouldn't happen if he hadn't said these comments. Unless he's not doing his job, don't fire him.
ReplyDeleteI hardly think it can qualify as doing your job if you're providing false information. We are all entitled to our own views, and if Dobbs wants to share his own view with the rest of the country, that is fine. But he crossed the line as soon as he decided to spew off incorrect facts, get blatantly called out for his lies, and still claim everything he said to be true. That is detrimental to our society and facilitates justification for hate groups and crimes. If you want to be bold in your opinion and are willing to take the criticism, go for it, but your opinion has to be based on legitimate facts.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous post that people are allowed to share their on views, whatever they may be,, no matter if they are offensive or not. However, it i his job as a news reporter to report facts and truth to the American public. If he is not doing that then CNN has every reason to fire him. I am not saying that if we get rid of him then the persecution and criticism of Mexicans in America will decrease, in fact it might cause an increase of prsecutions for a time, but that doesn't mean that Lou Dobbs should be allowed to share his negative opinions of immigrants on natinal television as fact.
ReplyDeleteThe problem I have with Dobbs is that he claims his statements to be facts. "What we report are FACTS." This is extremely misleading to CNN's viewers because this is how ethnocentric attitudes spread. Immigrants do not cause malaria and tuberculosis. Illegal immigrants do not constitute 1/3 of the prison population. The credibility of CNN is watered down by Dobbs one-sided opinions, not facts.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it, but I think these kind of outrageous guys are popular because a lot of people can't see past their rhetoric. I can think of a lot of examples of similar types of figures who are popular because they get people fired up about real issues using incorrect information.
