The new health care law takes many steps in the right direction. There are many things, especially health insurance, that need to be fixed and the bill proactively addresses them.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the bill also exacerbates the problem too. The bill plans to cover many of the uninsured using Medicaid or other options modeled after Medicaid. Medicaid, however, often only reimburses doctors 60% of the cost of treatment. Combined with new and costly staffing and procedural measures instituted in the new bill, this will leave many doctors, especially primary care physicians, unable to pay their overhead costs.
The results of all this will be that doctors will, as they are beginning to do now, refuse to treat Medicaid patients. This will mean that more and more Medicaid patients will have to go to already overcrowded emergency rooms in order to be treated. This will result in further overcrowding and even greater health care costs.
