I really enjoyed Charles Kuck's perspective on immigration. He was very realistic and responded perfectly to all the questions thrown at him. He was realistic in saying that there really is not a way to secure all the border. He asks: "Okay so are we supposed to put [hundreds of thousands] of national guards on the border?" It really isn't realistic to put up a huge border. As Kuck said, borders keep people in, not out. Also, I liked it when he said that we need to make it legal for people to come into our country, because either way they will continue to come. He says the best solution is to make it less appealing for people to come to the United States. We don't have workers to fill all the agricultural jobs that many immigrants fill. In the end, I would agree with Kuck that immigration should be made easier and if we want less of them, businesses need to appeal to them less.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that we need to make it less appealing to come to the United States illegally and more appealing to come legally, but unfortunately, this too is a tall order. Not to be the voice of gloom and doom, but the push and pull factors are currently so great for illegal immigration, many immigrants pay thousands of dollars and risk death in the desert to come to the US. When something is that appealing, there is a lot to be done to convince them to do it legally. Quite frankly, the ideas presented in class about worker passes and such sounds good, but though the main reason the line is so long is the limit to the number of visas, we also cannot process the paperwork as fast as would be necessary to give out, say, one million (or more)visas a year.
ReplyDeleteAnother option is cracking down on the hiring of illegal workers, but I am afraid this is another project that requires a lot of man power the government doesn't have and cannot afford.
